Room 10 Winton School

Thursday, May 31, 2012

This is Miss Brown with her writing group. In room 10 Right now we are studying poetry and in reading we have got some activities for poetry. We have now learnt in poetry you can have:similes, personification, metaphors and onomatopoeia's. Miss Brown told us that you can be creative and it doesn't have to make sense and that it doesn't have to rhyme.

Are you there, god? It's me Margaret
                          By Judy Blume

This book is about a little girl called Margaret. Her family has to move away because her dad got a job in New Jersey.Margaret can't wait to grow up her friends promised her they would tell her everything. She thinks that somethings are to embarrassing to talk about like having a crush on Moose Freed. I would rate this book a 5-5 because it is very interesting and funny. I would say girls would read this book and ages 11 and up cause it has a wee bit about growing up in it.

Blaze and the Dark Rider

Blaze and the Dark Rider By Stacy Greeg
" Issie she needs you" Avery says. This book is about Issie Brown and her new horse Blaze. When Issie finds out that Blaze is a famous horse she gets attached even more than she was to her horse. Late one night Issie goes to make sure Blaze is okay when she sees and shadow heading into the tack room! Issie follows the shadow into the tack room, she finds poison in her horse feed! She must find out who it is before they take her horse! But how?

Read Blaze and the Dark rider to find out! I rate this book a four, it is probably for age 9 and up or for any one totally horse MAD!

Teaching Mum and John sign Language

Teaching Mum sign Language was fun she knew how to sign her name after I showed her the letters.  Teaching John sign Language was alright because he wasn't really listening to me (I actually don't know how he got on in school) but he did get his name. I got them to sign their first and last names, Mum was brilliant but John didn't know how to spell his last name.John did have a  hard day at work so I forgave him for not paying attention.

Ashlee.K

Having Ashlee show us sign language was a fun challenge.  I remembered most of the alphabet from my school days.  She looked very comfortable signing and seemed to enjoy teaching us.

NZSL Week

Fantastic, it was very interesting to learn some words in NZSL. I'm sure it will be useful if I meet someone that speaks NZSL.
Danneille Reeves
WOW that was really cool! I had seen a lot of  New Zealand Sign language being used on T.V and had wondered what they had meant, now I know and can use this language to have conversations with people. I really enjoyed learning some parts of New Zealand Sign Language and hope I will be able to learn more in the future.

ANZAC Day

It's 7 o'clock on a Wednesday morning and the sound of the cannon is ear piercing as 2 shot are fired. The sound of The Last Post sends a shiver down everyones spine. Just to listen to it makes you feel cold inside; it's sad thinking about all those men dying just because one mistake was made , just round the corner and lots more men would have died in peace. The firing party shoots four shots into the sky from the old rifles, reloads and fires four more, then they stand to attention.

Everyone is greeted and then we pray. Its heads down and the whole place goes quiet looking round and seeing tears in people's eyes is heart breaking. Its heads up and a man does the poem 'In Flanders Field' again tears fill the eyes of most. The Central Southland College head boy and girl say something each about are great ANZACS. We now  sing Amazing Grace. Now the wreaths were laid to remember them: each one filled with poppies they all looked great, after everyone left still remembering the great ANZACS.

The Date of ANZAC
The 25 April ANZAC Day was originally for the members of the Australian and the New Zealand Army Corps to honour those that fought in Gallipolli during World War 1. Now it is for all those that fought or died in any war since World War 1.

On the 25 April 2012 at Winton ANZAC Oval, I was part of the Winton School Kapa Haka group that sang the National Anthem. At the ANZAC service they fired a canon like the ones that were used in the Vietnam War. It was very loud! We got a bit of a fright. Imagine lots of them going off on a battle field, it must have been terrifying. There was also a gun salute, which was also loud.

I have been going to the ANZAC service since I turned 5 years old. As I get older I'm learning a bit more about the ANZAC's and why we remember them every year. It is a good way to remember all of the people who have been lost at war but also those that are serving now to help keep world peace.

By Chloe Scurr
                                                                ANZAC
On the 25 of April 1915 New Zealand and Australia soldiers began to land at ANZAC cove Gallipoli at 9.00 am.

At the end of the day more than 100 New Zealand soldier had died. Most of the soldiers that died on the first day had no know grave. Overall 2721 New Zealand, 8500 Australians, 87000 Turks and 44000 french and british soldiers died.

The red poppy is a world wide symbol for those who died and served in war. The red poppy was one of the first to grow in the mud in flanders fields.

On the 25 of April since 1916 New Zealanders and Australians have had a dawn service to remember those who died and serviced in war. On ANZAC day wreaths are hung up on war memorials all over the country.

C.Smith's ANZAC Report

Dinkum Oil!?
" Hello chum! I've just heard some bonza news."
" What! Another furfie?"
" No dinkum oil this time. The boys have imshied the Turks on the right, and got 50 prisoners, who say they have had mafeesh tucker for two days."

Back in World War 1 (Great War) many countries that were part of the British Empire fought together as a team. These countries include New Zealand, Australia and India. This means that lots of cultures were often found fighting together in one place.
In 1915 the ANZAC's were in Gallipoli fighting the Turks. A returned transport officer that fought at Gallipoli came home to Invercargill and an article was written about the slang that he learnt over there and was unique to the ANZAC's and their travels.
This is lost history and it is interesting to discover these words that they used as part of everyday language. The opening dialog can be translated into proper English. As so below...

" Hello mate! I've just heard some ripping news."
" What! Another rumour?"
" No authenticated news this time. The boys have cleared out the Turks on the right, and have got 50 prisoners, who say they have had no food for 2 days."

Some of the slang words came from Egypt and include imshie and mafeesh, others like chum are English. Australian slang like bonza and dinkum are still used today.
Other slang words that were commonly used by the ANZAC's in Gallipoli include Indian slang including chipperow for for “shut up” and terms like “put some jildi into it” which means  “hurry up” and “let’s have a dekko” which means “let me have a look”.
Because all the First World War soldiers are now dead it is really interesting to read an old article about the language they used amongst themselves.  The words came together during a unique time and will never be used again.
