Shrinking the Solar System!

We have been studying the Solar System as part of our Science unit. We wanted to 'shrink the solar system' to see the comparison sizes and distances between the planets. Because the solar system is SO HUGE we had to scale the planets down to size. This meant that Earth had a diameter of 8mm and Pluto had a diameter of only 1.5mm!
Creating the sun with a diameter of 90cm

The planets lined up in order
Measuring the distance the planets will be. 1 metre  = 1 million km!!

Placing Mars it its position in the solar system

Working out distances between the planets.

The planets in order. Can you find planet Earth?

At the very end Pluto is over 5 billion km's away from the sun!!

  2. It was lots of fun shrinking and making our solar system. From this experience i have learnt a lot about the planets, stars and space. But i still have one more question is there more than one solar system?

  4. What a great experience. I had lots of fun shrinking the Solar System. From this experience I have learnt that every planet has a completely different feature, and all the stars have a life cycle. But I still have one question IS THERE ANOTHER LIVING THING IN SPACE?

  7. Shrinking the Solar System was really interesting because I didn't thing that the solar system would be that big even when we shrinked it.
I would love to do another topic like that again!
    Thank you Miss Brown!

  8. I loved taking pictures for our homemade Solar System, but while learning about the Solar System I learnt alot like how big the planets really are than what i though they were and also that the stars represent horoscopes

  9. Making the solar system was amazing and was so creative. I wish we that we could do it again because it would be really good for the class that they could re-freash. Thank you Miss Brown.
