Dawn Parade 2012
'BOOM!' There goes the cannon as we stand in front of the band rotunda in Winton on the 25th of April 2012, to remember the men that lost there lives serving our country at ANZAC cove in Gallipoli.
On the calm, cool morning, young and old gathered to remember the soliders that fought for New Zealand.
Alot of people gathered to hear the last post bugle play. Mr Flynn from Winton Mitre 10) welcomed the ex-servicemen to come and sit up the front of the band rotunda. (Mr Flynn has not long retuned from Afghanistan.) After that welcome of the ex-servicemen Mr Jeffrey welcomed everyone and explained the procedures. The local presbyterian Minister said a prayer. then it was time for the head boy and head girl for Central Southland Collage to do some readings.
Next Mr Millar from Winton RSA laied a wreath from RSA in front of the band rotunda. There it was 'BOOM!'Everyone got a big fright 'BOOM!' and again the cannon rung out. IMGNEthat all day every day... cannons and guns. firing knowing your life could end and minute soon.Next minute 6 gun shots rung out from a representive from the New Zealand Army. Then many people brought up the wreaths to be laied on the gates out side Mervs and Millies. Shay and Conner from our schoolbrought up the wreath from Winton School. Now it was SHOWTIME it was time for the Winton KapaHaka group to shine as we had to lead the national anthem. The bugler then played the last post.
"At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them."

Its a Time We Remember
When they left in the ships there were tears there were cries but some of them just watched thinking about their demise.
As they sailed into the distance in the bitter morning air we saw their white smiles starting to disappear.

Shrinking the Solar System!
We have been studying the Solar System as part of our Science unit. We wanted to 'shrink the solar system' to see the comparison sizes and distances between the planets. Because the solar system is SO HUGE we had to scale the planets down to size. This meant that Earth had a diameter of 8mm and Pluto had a diameter of only 1.5mm!
Creating the sun with a diameter of 90cm |
The planets lined up in order |
Measuring the distance the planets will be. 1 metre = 1 million km!! |
Placing Mars it its position in the solar system |
Working out distances between the planets. |
The planets in order. Can you find planet Earth? |
At the very end Pluto is over 5 billion km's away from the sun!! |
